CHAPTER NINE

“Alright, Connor, let’s go over the game plan.” On Friday Blaine, Jim and Connor stood outside one of the corrals. The bulls had an air of excitement about them. Blaine was convinced they always knew when they were about to be pastured with the cows. “Today is kind of like the beginning of the year for the ranch.”

“What do you mean?” Connor turned off the UTV and stood next to it, waiting for further instruction.

“The cycle starts all over again,” Jim said. He’d driven the four-wheeler over. “The bulls join the cows, and soon we’ll have a herd of pregnant cows again.”

“We need to be cautious,” Blaine said. “When feeling threatened, cows run. But bulls? They want to fight. So we’re going to rely on the older bulls to help the younger ones see the trailer as nonthreatening.” He checked the hitch where the trailer was attached to the truck. Everything appeared to be ready. “I’ll back the trailer to the gate, and Jim will take the four-wheeler to steer them through the series of corrals. Your job is to open and close the gates. As soon as you open one, climb up on the fence. I don’t want you getting hurt. I’ll be behind the bulls with a long paddle to keep them moving. Let’s hope none of them get cold feet about getting in the trailer.”

“Will they all fit?” Connor asked. Jim gunned the four-wheeler and drove along the fence to the gate of the large corral, where the bulls were milling about.

“No. We’ll be taking more than one load. I’m glad the weather is perfect. I would have waited until next week if it was too hot or windy, or even too cold. They get ornery easily.”

“What else should I do?”

“Keep an eye out for us. If one of the bulls is getting close, holler.”

“Okay.”

“Go ahead and drive over there.” He pointed to the smallest corral. “Once I back the trailer to the gate, I’ll need your help getting it lined up.”

He nodded and started the UTV. Blaine climbed into the truck for the short drive. Ever since the fireworks, he’d been busy moving the bales of hay to winter storage. He’d still had too much time to think about Sienna, though, and everything he’d learned about her.

What she’d told him about her ex-husband had curdled his stomach. She deserved better than that.

And what she’d said about wanting her baby to have a father? He hadn’t been able to stop thinking about it. He tried not to let his mind wander to kids or having a family. Mainly because he’d never really wanted to get married.

But Sienna had him questioning himself.

If the impossible happened and somehow they ended up together...could he be a father to someone else’s child? Could he be a father period?

Checking his mirrors, he backed up the trailer, then rolled down his window.

“How much room do I have?” he yelled to Connor, who was standing near the gate. Connor used his hands to show him the distance.
